Performs primary screening of Non-Gyn cytology cases including fine needle aspiration samples before presenting to pathologists for review. Performs routine cytology specimen preparatory procedures using established protocols: assists with Fine Needle Aspiration collection and scheduling. Prepares and maintains all lab records for quality control, quality assurance and accreditation agencies.]
Essential Functions: The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below. In addition, specific functions may change from time to time: Prepares cytology specimens for microscopic examination through centrifugation, smear preparation, staining and coverslipping. Performs computer functions to include specimen accession: entry of clinical data to include specimen source and description. Performs cytological screening on all slides to detect abnormal cellular conditions: places appropriate marks on slides to direct pathologist to abnormal cells or other significant findings. Documents initial diagnostic findings and presents to the pathologist for review and completion. Provides pathologist with all slides and special studies required to establish accurate cytological diagnosis. Maintains quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement programs for the Cytology lab. Compiles and retains statistical data in compliance with regulatory standards. Provides pathologist with monthly report containing cytology statistics and workload and Cytology/Histology correlation on suspicious and malignant cases. Schedules and assists with special procedures such as Fine Needle Aspirations (FNA) both ultrasound and CT guided, including inpatient bedside service. Maintains Cytology laboratory policy and procedure manuals, recommends and implements new cytological procedures and policies. Attends all required safety training programs Maintains work area—cleans bench, restocks supplies notifies Histology Technical Specialist of low stock. Other duties as assigned
Education and Formal Training: Bachelors degree in Cytotechnology program required CT (ASCP) certification or eligible required If CT(ASCP) eligible, must obtain certification within 1 year of hire date to retain employment Work Experience: 3 years of Cytology work experience preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: none Physical Requirements: Lifting up to 25 pounds General motion including bending, squatting, reaching, carrying, pushing and pulling. Manual dexterity Ability to speak plainly. Near visual acuity, ability to discern colors. May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material.
