SUMMARY: The Molecular Testing Personnel will be involved in various laboratory procedures including analysis of clinical samples by molecular biology methods with a focus on assays including, but not limited to, DNA sequencing, and real-time PCR. All testing personnel are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and should only perform test that are authorized by the laboratory director and are within the individual’s skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
REPORTING STRUCTURE:
This position reports to the Molecular Biology Supervisor.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follow the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling, processing and storage utilizing all necessary standard precautions, in a timely manner.
- Report any issues to the supervisor immediately during any step of the process.
- Reporting & Data Management: Exporting results, generating reports, perform data entry, and obtaining necessary approvals before distribution.
- Documentation: Attaching genotypic tables to outgoing reports and ensuring all data successfully crosses over into the organization’s laboratory information system (LIS) outreach module (Copia/eLab) to the client’s electronic medical record (EMR) system via “End of Day” reports.
- Archiving: Scanning final reports signed by CLIA Laboratory Director into eLab.
- Case Tracking: Maintaining a daily log of all incoming cases, cross-checking cases “run” vs. “not run” vs “waiting” to ensure no samples are missed.
- Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving technical or workflow issues as they arise.
- Quality & Safety: Running QC to monitor for contamination and managing appropriate biohazardous. Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies and documenting all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.
- Administrative Follow-up: Checking insurance and eligibility to determine which cases to run, and coordination with the Eligibility Team when information is missing.
- Maintenance: Maintaining all laboratory equipment and performing routine QC checks.
- Maintain records of patient worklist for identification of patient run sequence and results.
- Maintain records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are performed in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Follow the laboratory’s policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
- Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, and either correct the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor.
- Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
- Only perform high complexity testing under the on-site direct supervision of a general supervisor, if required by personnel qualification requirements.
- Performs nucleic acid extraction (DNA and/or RNA) on all validated sample types.
- Utilizes appropriate equipment with precision for all molecular diagnostic protocols.
- Performs high complexity molecular diagnostic techniques and demonstrates competency with pipetting and PCR techniques.
