Job Description
A recently founded biotechnology startup company with a mission to develop and commercialize low carbon sustainable aviation fuels from highly productive algae is seeking a highly skilled and creative scientist to drive photosynthetic trait discovery efforts.
Working collaboratively with scientific leads, the scientist will accelerate photosynthetic trait discovery though design and implementation of high throughput screening approaches and hypothesis-driven genetic design of phototrophic algae. This position will support lab-based trait discovery team in San Diego, CA.
Responsibilities
- Work with project leads to implement experiments employing advanced techniques to improve the productivity of algal strains
- Laboratory scale cultivation of algae under precise experimental conditions
- Contribute to the design and implementation of high-throughput strain characterization assays
- Conceptualize and execute adaptive evolution experiments for screening and selection of improved algal strains
- Strategic design and testing of improved algae through metabolic and photosynthetic trait engineering
- Document standard operating procedures (SOPs), experimental procedures and outcomes
- Analyze, summarize, and present experimental data, conclusions, and experimental proposals
- Maintain up to date knowledge of scientific literature and technological advancements
Qualifications
- Requires a Ph.D. in biological sciences such as cell biology, microbiology, or plant biology with 0-3 years of relevant industry or post-doctoral laboratory experience
- Laboratory experience with cultivation and characterization of phototrophic organisms grown under photoautotrophic conditions
- Experience with techniques for monitoring photosynthesis, such as through chlorophyll fluorescence
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with flow cytometry and fluorescence-assisted cell sorting highly desirable
- Laboratory experience with cultivation and characterization of phototrophic microorganisms, especially green algae
- Experience with lab-scale photobioreactors
Pay: $110,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
