Summary:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice nurse, who utilizes advanced knowledge and clinical expertise in providing clinical evaluation, diagnostic and therapeutic management services to pediatric and adult patients suspected/ with genetic and inherited metabolic conditions and to families of diverse ethnic backgrounds in the Division of Genetic, Genomic and Metabolic Disorders. Meet the qualifications to provide care for patients in their assigned clinical area in a collaborative model. Perform duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize patient satisfaction. Works closely with physicians and Genetics team under the direction of Division Chief (supervisory physician) to provide clinical services, education, resources to other physicians, learners, patient care staff, patients and families, community in a diverse and collaborative environment. Appropriate privileges are required to prescribe pharmacological and medical interventions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Collects, reviews, interprets and discusses comprehensive clinical information including medical, educational, family and prenatal histories for pediatric and adult patient encounter with relevant documentation and EMR requirements.
2. Works under the supervision and direction of the Division Chief, Genetics, Genomics and Metabolic Disorders.
3. Determines and provides current literature on the natural history, clinical phenotype, therapeutic and management modalities of genetic and metabolic disorders.
4. Identifies and utilizes national and community resources that can assist patients and their families with medical, financial, educational and psychosocial support.
5. Participates and assists in departmental clinical, educational and research endeavors.
6. Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
7. All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Registered Nurse licensure to practice in the state of Michigan
- State of Michigan Nurse Specialty Certification as Acute Care or Pediatric or Family Practice Nurse Practitioner
- Master’s degree or greater in nursing from an accredited College or University.
- Prior experience as an RN or NP with interests in Genetics and experience with
complex or acute patients is preferred but not required.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge and proficiency in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, word processing and file management using Microsoft Office and other software as required by the department.
2. Knowledge and proficiency in written, oral, and electronic communication skills.
3. Ability to effectively function in an interdisciplinary environment.
4. Ability to demonstrate competence in delivery of prompt and effective clinical care.
5. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in workload, staffing and scheduling.
6. Demonstrate research skills (self-education). Identifying information and sources including medical literature and experts, and then extracting relevant information for patients.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is typically performed in a clinical/office environment.
The employee regularly works in a clean, well-lighted, temperature controlled, and smoke-free environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Minimal risk of exposure to noxious substances and infectious agents.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to perform a combination of sitting, standing and walking. Must have the ability to hear within normal range and possess the physical capability and hand dexterity to operate basic office equipment.
Working Conditions:
1. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.
2. Able to complete duties under stress, deadlines, and while attending to multiple duties simultaneously.
3. Prolonged computer related exposure, as well as sitting and standing at workstations for long periods of time.
4. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
5. Bending, sitting, and standing frequently throughout the day.
6. Occasionally travel off-site for clinics, meetings, conferences, seminars, and training.
