Job Summary
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is seeking two (2) experienced Molecular Biologist II contractors to join the Genetic Sequencing Branch within the Wastewater Surveillance Department. Under general supervision, this position involves performing highly complex and specialized specimen handling and coordination activities following standard successful candidate will be a highly specialized expert responsible for performing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) testing on critical public health samples.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
The contractor will perform activities requiring scientific knowledge, initiative, and independent judgment, ensuring stringent quality, accuracy, and efficiency.
Key duties include:
- Performing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) testing on COVID-19 positive wastewater specimens and Mycobacterium tuberculosis samples.
- Executing detailed tasks, including sample preparation, testing, and data analysis.
- Using data visualization techniques and entering results into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Ensuring proper quality control and accuracy of outgoing reports.
- Organizing residual specimens and maintaining instruments.
Providing technical training to DSHS employees and personnel from other laboratories
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of microbiology principles and practices, including laboratory safety, aseptic technique, and handling of pathogenic organisms
- Knowledge of molecular techniques
- Ability to organize daily workloads, set priorities, and maintain work efficiency under stress.
