Role Overview
We’re looking for a contract Phlebotomist with experience as a Laboratory Technician to work on-site at a clinical study location in Los Angeles, approximately 3-5 mornings per week on an ongoing basis. You’ll perform venipuncture and process blood, tissue, and other biofluid samples according to SOPs. Full training will be provided on Onyx Bio’s specific sample processing protocols, including PBMC isolation, cryopreservation, and tissue processing. This is a hands-on, independent role—you’ll be the sole Onyx Bio presence at the site and need to execute reliably with minimal day-to-day supervision.
Responsibilities
Perform venipuncture on study participants per protocol and collect blood into specified tube types.
Process blood and biofluid samples per SOP, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and pipetting.
Perform PBMC isolation, cryopreservation, and tissue processing procedures (training provided).
Perform cell counts and viability assessments using automated cell counter.
Label, log, and store all samples per study-specific chain-of-custody requirements.
Coordinate sample shipping: dry ice packaging, courier scheduling, temperature monitoring, and shipping documentation.
Maintain equipment (centrifuges, biosafety cabinet, cell counter) and flag maintenance needs.
Follow all SOPs, document deviations, and maintain accurate batch records.
Requirements
California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-1 or CPT-2), active and in good standing.
2+ years of phlebotomy experience in a clinical, research, or laboratory setting.
Basic laboratory bench skills: centrifugation, pipetting, aliquoting, and sample labeling.
Comfortable working independently at a clinical site without direct on-site supervision.
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow SOPs precisely.
Familiarity with universal precautions and safe handling of human biospecimens.
Must carry active professional liability insurance.
Must have an independently established business (LLC, sole proprietorship, or equivalent).
Nice to Have
MLT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), or California CLS credential.
Experience in a clinical research, biobank, or CRO setting.
Experience with PBMC isolation, cryopreservation, or cell counting.
Experience with cold-chain shipping logistics (dry ice, couriers).
IATA dangerous goods shipping certification.
Bilingual (English/Spanish).
Training Provided
Onyx Bio will provide hands-on training on all sample processing protocols, including PBMC isolation (Ficoll), cryopreservation with DMSO, tissue dissociation, and cell viability assessment. Candidates with careful laboratory technique and attention to detail will be fully trained to perform all required procedures.
