PLANT LAB TECHNICIAN
Role Summary
This position will be responsible for ensuring product quality, compliance with Quality Management System standards, and proper maintenance of laboratory systems/equipment. This role supports production through testing, certification, documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the care of laboratory equipment assets.
- Quality testing and certification of products and preparation and filing of COAs.
- Utilizing ISO procedures that apply to laboratory functions.
- Responsible for standardizing solutions, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting equipment according to schedule.
- In-process and final inspection and testing.
- Properly labeling, handling, and storing chemicals and sample retains.
- Maintain SQC charts, observing trends and notifying plant management team as appropriate.
- Maintain the laboratory in a neat and organized manner.
- Observe Pilot’s Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan.
- Responsible for training and certifying plant operators in lab testing procedures.
- Maintain the non-inventoried chemical inventory list.
- Order reagents and supplies to maintain minimum inventory levels.
- Complete projects or tasks to continually improve the quality department as a whole or improve the lab.
Required Competencies
- Associate’s degree in chemical lab technology or 2 years of a related science.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a full-time lab technician role will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a lab or two years in a manufacturing plant.
- Proven verbal and written communication skills.
- Personal computer experience and must have good typing skills.
- Training or certification in a quality management system.
- Must have the ability at all times to reach all work areas in the plant (i.e. climb ladders, walk catwalks, handle heights to 50 feet, etc.), to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. or to open and close large valves, to don emergency equipment, and to expeditiously evacuate if required.
Recommended Competencies
- Working knowledge of MS Word and Excel and the ability to quickly learn other software.
- Hands on experience of the maintenance, repair, and use of lab equipment such as pH meters, moisture balances, IC’s, auto titrator, colorimeter, and viscometers. This can be obtained in an educational setting or in a full-time job role.
- Be service oriented, as well as self-motivated, a team player, and an independent driven individual.
- Background in SPC, ISO 9001 quality system, and continuous improvement.
- Understanding of the importance of SOP’s and document control.
